In 1992, Soror Helen Wooten Bryant had a vision to organize another alumnae chapter in the Chicagoland area, and shared her vision with five Sorors: Past Grand Basileus Dr. Annie Lawrence Brown, Dr. Carrie Davis, Shirley Jones, Jacqueline Thweat-Pippion and Linda Williams. A clarion call was sounded to 40 more exemplary Sigma women. On August 16, 1992, these 40 dynamic women, along with the six founding Sorors, charted one of the largest graduate chapters in Sigma Gamma Rho history, and thus Eta Xi Sigma Alumnae Chapter, Oak Lawn, Illinois, was born. These visionary women, led by their dynamic founding Basileus, Helen Wooten-Bryant, saw an opportunity to further the goals of our Founders by expanding the community services offered by Sigma Gamma Rho throughout the cities of Oak Lawn and Chicago, Illinois.
Eta Xi Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated is a chapter that believes in exceeding expectations in everything that we do. It is important to our chapter to support and promote the aims and goals of Sigma, be of service to others in the community and continue our own growth and development individually and as a chapter.
Ever since being established on the campus of Butler University in 1922 by Seven Educators, the making of a true and lasting sisterhood has always been the focus of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. It was true sisterhood that enabled our organization to be the first historically black sorority founded at a predominantly white university. It was true sisterhood that fortified our Alpha chapter and beyond to stand strong in the face of oppression in the form of widespread institutionalized racism and sexism. It is only through true sisterhood, that Sigma Gamma Rho has been able to grow and expand to become an international, non-profit orgranization with over 500 chapters in the U.S., Bahamas, Bermuda, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, Germany and Korea. It is true sisterhood, that despite our growth, Sigma women maintain close bonds at the personal level with our Sorors and these individual bonds endure through decades and circumstances. Our unique sisterhood creates lifetime bonds and memories from undergraduate, graduate and years beyond.
Eta Xi Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Oak Lawn, Illinois was established as a graduate chapter with the overarching goal of preserving our strong sisterhood. As one of the largest graduate chapters in the Central region, Eta Xi Sigma encourages bonding among our membership through various activities held throughout the sorority year. Our sisterhood teas, Loving Sigma Social, Sigma Round Up, Family Skate Night, mentoring of our undergraduates, as well as a host of other social events foster an inviting atmosphere where each Soror feels connected to her Sigma Family. Our sisterhood is comprised of professional women in various disciplines and fields and gives our members the opportunity to establish business networks as well. Our sisterhood extends to include our Philo Affiliates and Rhoer club members, and we work together to accomplish our goals and become the beacon of light that is Sigma Gamma Rho.
