Beacon of Light Foundation of Eta Xi Sigma Alumnae Chapter

Since 2006, The mission of the Beacon of Light Foundation is to: provide scholarships and grants to post-secondary students; promote higher education for women of all ages; promote technological advancement for at-risk youth; cultivate community service and development opportunities; promote health and safety awareness; and provide financial empowerment workshops for youth and women.

These objectives are carried out through advocacy, public education and a variety of projects and activities to address the needs of a disenfranchised society. At the foremost of our community thrust are vulnerable at-risk families and communities.

The Beacon of Light Foundation is proud to collaborate with Eta Xi Sigma to continue the work started in 1922 by seven school teachers at Butler University. Annually, the Beacon of Light Foundation works closely with the Scholarship committee of Eta Xi Sigma to award scholarships to high school students in our community that have excelled academically and in the civic arena. We look forward to more projects that will partner our efforts and resources to improve the community.

Annual Eta Xi Sigma Scholarship Award

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated was founded on November 12, 1922, on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. The sorority, which is the only one of the four NPHC sororities founded on a predominantly white college campus, was founded by seven school teachers who were determined to create an organization of women who were committed to the educational advancement of African-American children.

The annual scholarship award is awarded every spring at our Pre-Mother’s Day Award Banquet and Fashion Show. Award recipients are selected from area high school applicants who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship and service to their respective communities.
